THE ISLAND RUEGEN
AND THE FOSSILS OF THE WRITE CHALK

The chalking express bank in the national park Jasmund

Thousands of visitors explore annually the island and its unique beaches.  Impressively the chalking express bank between Sassnitz and the king chair, with a height up to 119 m. the coast rises is suspended constant the erosion by wind and water and is subject therefore to a constant modification. The sea surf gnaws at the slopes of the chalk cliff and rinses so again and again flints and also fossils from the pending chalk.  This Type of rock is back and forth rolled and released by the wave impact in such a way from the adhering chalk and from sharp edges.  With something luck the collecting tank in this beach rubble finds beautiful fossils in the form of unreeled sea-hedgehog sea-hedgehog corehedgehog cores, thunder wedges, thick-shelled oysters, sponges and much more.

With these pages I want to try to provide for the layman and hobby paleontologist an overview to the Palaeogeographie of the island ruegen and the fossils of the Ruegener write chalk on the basis my collection and the descriptions of the discovery sites
